In 1963, the University of the Philippines, College of Forestry created its Department of Forestry Extension by virtue of Republic Act No. 3523. With the College reorganization in 1978, the Department of Forestry Extension was split into two–the Forestry Extension Office and the Department of Social Forestry.

On June 25, 1988, the College of Forestry was officially reorganized and renamed the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR) during the 1121st meeting of the Board of Regents of the University of the Philippines. part of the reorganization was renaming the Department of Social Forestry to the Department of Social Forestry and Forest Governance (DSFFG). This has broadened its concerns from social forestry to include the domain of politics and administration of forestry and natural resources.

As one of CFNR’s academic units, the Department has instituted courses in social forestry which are now integrated into the Bachelor of Science in Forestry and the Associate of Science in Forestry curricula. It also offered social forestry as an area of specialization in the BSF program and two master programs–the Master of Science in Forestry (MSF) and Master of Forestry (MF)–to promote research and to develop professional leadership in this field.
